While sateen sheets are similar to satin sheets, they aren’t to be confused with one another. The satin weave structure (one under, three over) creates sateen sheets, but yarn is used rather than filament fibers. Despite the differences in material, sateen sheets are just as elegant and silky smooth as satin. They are less durable than percale sheets but also better for cold sleepers and cooler weather. 

The two things to consider when looking at a sheet set are 1) the material it is made with and 2) the weave or knit style. Materials are the fibers — raw materials not formed into fabric — and weave or knit as the form of construction used to make the fiber into a cloth. The same material can feel different depending on the weave or knit style, and the same weave or knit style can feel different depending on the material.

Thread count is the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count, the more durable the fabric will be. In most cases, a higher thread count also means a softer fabric. However, the type of fiber and weave can also affect the quality of the sheets and should be considered when researching your options. When looking at the thread count, try to find sheets that are between 200-800.

Despite the cons, silk sheets are cool, rich, and perfect for adding more romance to a room.
