If you use accessories such as installation tools or grease containers, it is just as important to ensure they are taken care of. A good practice is to cover grease containers with a sealable lid when not in use. In doing so, you reduce the risk of dirt contaminating the grease and, subsequently, your oil seal.

Floating oil seals are also highly resistant to heat and abrasion, which makes them well-suited for use in demanding applications. Whether operating in extreme temperatures or harsh conditions, these seals can withstand the rigors of the environment without compromising their sealing performance. This makes them an ideal choice for industries such as mining, construction, and agriculture, where equipment is subjected to heavy loads and constant wear.

If there are curved seals, fit these to the engine. Smear sealant on the seal groove, stick the seal in place, and apply a blob of sealant to each end of the seal where it joins the gasket.

Leather is probably the oldest of the lip materials still in common use, but the move towards mass production methods has seen a massive increase in the development of synthetic rubbers which lend themselves to accurate and repeatable injection and compression moulding. Nitrile (NBR) is still by far the most common elastomer for “normal” use, whilst Viton® (FKM/FPM) is rapidly replacing Polyacrylate (ACM) and Silicone (VMQ) for high-temperature applications. Viton® also has high resistance to abrasion and chemical attack making it a preferred elastomer. Recent developments in the use of PTFE for Rotary shaft seals has caused widespread interest particularly for high-speed shaft rotation or poor lubrication applications.

4.  SHAFT SPEED: As different shafts move at different speeds you need to consider the runout, the housing bore, and oil type being sealed. Ensure you select a seal that will not suffer from abrasions or spiralling.

The metal used in the outer case of oil seals is usually made of carbon steel. Upon request, and depending on quantities, a different type of steel (such as stainless steel) can be used.

Viton (FKM/FPM) Oil Seals
